Ivar Giæver has been associated with the research project "The physics of porous media" under Statoil's direction since 1989. He became a VISTA Professor in 1994.
During his VISTA Professorship, Ivar Giæver was Institute Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, while for three months of the year he was to conduct research at the University of Oslo and visit various VISTA teams in Norway.
Ivar Giæver's research touches upon a variety of different disciplines. In terms of VISTA, his research has been particularly important in the priority area "Improved recovery", but has also had positive repercussions far beyond this. Ivar Giæver's international standing and personal qualities have helped give the VISTA programme a high scientific profile and attract attention outside Norway too.
Ivar Giæver won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973. He was elected as a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 1974.
