Bernt Øksendal has published 23 publications in connection with his VISTA appointment and has achieved international recognition for his research. All in all, he has over 180 scientific publications, including five books.
Bernt Øksendal is one of Norway's foremost mathematicians and was elected as a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 1996. The same year he was awarded the Fridtjof Nansen Prize for outstanding research in stochastic analysis and applications.
In 2009 Bernt Øksendal received the European Research Council's Advanced Grant for five years for the project "Innovations in stochastic analysis and applications" (approx. NOK 16 million).
In his final report Bernt Øksendal wrote: "There is no doubt that the excellent research conditions that the VISTA Professorship has given me have been crucial for my research activity during the last four years. The appointment has made it possible for me to dedicate a larger portion of my time to research than I would otherwise have been able to. It has also given me the freedom, in terms of both time and money, to attend important seminars and to be able to work on difficult material in relative peace. Unfortunately, ordinary professorships rarely afford the opportunity for this kind of concentration."
