New VISTA Centers for future energy solutions

The VISTA board calls for proposals for new VISTA centers to be established i 2020. Two new centers will be funded by MNOK 4,5 annually for five years. Areas of research include basin analysis, future development solutions and sustainability, environment and low carbon solutions.

The VISTA program is a continuation of more than 30 year´s of collaboration between The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and Equinor (formerly Statoil). The VISTA-board has developed a new strategy, and its approval by the partners was the basis for a renewal of a five-year contract.
Equinor will annually provide MNOK 20 for research according to the new strategic plan. Additional funding will be sought from the Donor Matching Scheme. On this basis, the VISTA board calls for proposals for new VISTA centers. Two new centers will be funded by MNOK 4,5 annually for five years.

Exellence and research centers
The call for new "VISTA Centers for Interdisciplinary Research on Future Energy Solutions" is a continuation of a 34-year collaboration between Equinor and the Academy to support basic research of relevance to the exploitation and use of fossil fuels . Previously the program funded individual scholarships on the PhD and postdoc level. The ongoing energy transition leading to a sustainable future demands scientific approaches that span many fields and require research that has excellent quality and is integrated in the international scientific community. At the same time there is a strong need for public outreach to support the decision-making that is needed for a low carbon future. We believe these goals are best achieved within research centers that are tightly linked to our best research environments, says chairperson of the Vista board, Ole M. Sejersted.

Interdiciplinary
The centers must be located at a university at which the principal investigator holds a position, adhere to the principles of RRI (Responsible Research & Innovation) and be truly interdisciplinary.

-    VISTA is a collaboration between the Academy and Equinor, based on the parties' common interest in promoting excellent basic research. The starting point is practical problems, with recruitment and education as important elements. From the Academy's point of view, it is important to support the way in which Norwegian research environments at the universities contribute with knowledge and innovation in the transition to a low carbon society. VISTA is an important tool in this context, says Hans Petter Graver, president of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

The aim of the program is to support science that provides fundamental insight in three areas:
1) Basin analysis, efficient resource identification and utilization, and unlocking new resources
2) Future development solutions
3) Sustainability, environment and low carbon solutions.
