Status

In this fourth semester the scholar has attended one mandatory course in addition to obligated teaching duties. Synthesis and hardness measurements of catalyst support particles by Vickers indentation has been carried out. Homogeneous non porous zinc-, magnesium-, manganese- and cobalt- aluminate samples has also been synthesised and analysed by XRD and Rietveld refinement. The little increase in strength for the pure alumina is believed to be due to coarsening of the pore structure whereas infiltrated samples gain strength due to the formation of a spinel phase. The vickers indentation on the catalyst support together with the Rietveld refinement of the homogeneous non porous samples imply a correlation between the strength and the solid solubility of alumina into the spinel phase. Still this needs further investigation to be confirmed. The scholar has also initialized TEM investigation of the catalyst supports.
